Docs Getting Started Installation & License Activation

Installation & License Activation

System Requirements

Before installing, make sure your environment meets these minimums:

  • WordPress 5.8 or higher
  • PHP 8.2 or higher
  • MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.3+

ToolDocs™ works with any properly coded WordPress theme. The frontend forms and download links integrate cleanly with standard WordPress styling, and you can customize colors to match your brand.

Installing the Plugin

Option A: Upload via WordPress Admin

  1. Download the latest .zip file from your ToolDocs™ account or the WordPress plugin repository (free version).
  2. In WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin and select the ZIP file.
  3. Click Install Now, then Activate Plugin.

Option B: Upload via FTP

Extract the ZIP and upload the tooldocs folder to /wp-content/plugins/ on your server. Then activate through the Plugins screen in WordPress.

On activation, ToolDocs™ automatically creates the database tables it needs and generates three starter pages (Login, Registration, and Whitelist Registration) with the appropriate shortcodes already in place.

Activating Your License

Premium features require an active license key. The free version works without a license but does not include gated downloads, registration forms, or access control features.

  1. Navigate to ToolDocs → License in your WordPress admin.
  2. Enter the license key from your purchase confirmation email.
  3. Click Activate.

Your license status will update to show your plan type and expiration date. Each key has a limited number of site activations based on your plan tier.

Without an active license, CSS styles still load but interactive features (modals, tracking, authentication flows) will not function.

Where Files Are Stored

By default, uploaded documents are stored in wp-content/uploads/tooldocs/. You can change this path in Settings → General. Files remain on your server — ToolDocs™ does not use external storage. Documents are also added to the WordPress media library.
